In family medicine residency, integrating community resources into the curriculum can help residents better support patients. The challenge is finding time for residents to make those important community connections. As part of their work with our Methodist Hospital Family Medicine Residency program, Dr. Shannon Neale and Dr. Amy Bonifas came up with a new idea: they gathered audio recordings from various community partners and included them in different parts of the residency curriculum. The recordings cover topics like food insecurity and community policing. They’re combined with reflection sessions and activities, such as delivering meals to people in need, to help residents learn about community resources in a flexible and efficient way. “We’re trying to make these community resources a part of the curriculum, so the residents are learning about issues and also learning about our community at the same time,” said Dr. Neale. Compassionate and kindness can go a long way. When a member of her team became discouraged on a tough call, Lauren Lyons, a member services supervisor and project leader, stepped in to help. Lauren’s actions made such an impact on her colleague that they say they’re inspired to “be like Lauren” by going the extra mile. Lauren is one example of the incredible individuals across the HealthPartners care group that lead with excellence and compassion.
