Last week, I found that I’m a Point Foundation Persistence Scholar! The Persistence Scholarship acknowledges scholarship finalists for their achievements and awards the leadership of LGBTQ+ students. Especially with the upcoming election and the current climate around human rights, it is super important that scholarships like this exist in the community. I hope that my fellow scholars will consider using opportunities like this to advocate for queer rights. Point Scholar Jessie Miller, studying sociology at the University of Illinois, Chicago, is a bisexual activist and scholar who founded the Bi+ Resilience Alliance for Violence Eradication (BRAVE) to combat bisexual domestic violence. Jessie is currently pursuing a doctorate in sociology at the University of Illinois Chicago, researching bisexual health and queer criminology. Jessie aspires to create safe spaces and support networks for the bisexual community and address their health disparities. As the 2024-25 school year begins, students return to colleges, universities, and schools that may be more biased against LGBTQ students. This semester, states nationwide are enforcing new policies that target students’ education, LGBTQ services, and hiring and recruitment policies.

We are disheartened to hear that the Supreme Court ruled against implementing #TitleIX changes that expand protections against discrimination to LGBTQ students. New Title IX rules can help LGBTQ students, in particular transgender students, who face more harassment throughout their entire educational experience, according to our research with the Williams Institute. This ruling means LGBTQ students in ten states will not receive updated Title IX protections. Point stands by the Title IX changes that improve protections for LGBTQ students. https://lnkd.in/dYAtUdha

Point Scholars are heading back to school to make a change! Rehman Hassan – originally from Missouri City, Texas – is a passionate human rights advocate studying human rights at Stanford University. Recognized as a WHO Adolescent Champion and a UN Refugee Agency Young Champion, Rehman has consulted for various international organizations and authored numerous papers. They aspire to develop culturally competent policies to enhance the well-being of underserved communities.
