According to Realtor.com, the salary needed to afford a home has increased by 62% since before the pandemic. In San Antonio, the median priced home was about $288k in June 2016 and the minimum required income was about $58k. Eight years later, the median priced home is now around $349k and the minimum required income is $94k. Although our organization can't directly influence the housing market, Close to Home is committed to improving our homeless response system through continued collaboration with our Alliance partners and educating the community on the need for affordable housing options. SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery or (SOAR) is a program that helps communities end homelessness through increased access to Social Security disability benefits. Our partners in The Alliance to House Everyone have 6 certified SOAR-trained Case Managers available to help our unsheltered population fast-track their applications for benefits and connect to permanent supportive housing. Applications are now open for the City of San Antonio Neighborhood & Housing Services Department (NHSD)'s Under 1 Roof Program! This program replaces worn and damaged shingles with new, energy-efficient white shingle roofs and solar underlayment, proven to improve energy efficiency. Roof shingle replacement is limited to the primary house on the property. Please note, this is a one-time grant, and the City of San Antonio will place a restrictive covenant on the property requiring homeowners to maintain ownership and occupancy for five years after project completion. The application will remain open until all funding is exhausted.
