We are thrilled to share Sesame Sustainability’s latest academic paper! In this article, authors Paul Sizaire and Emre Gençer present an extensive methodology and model for hydrogen supply chain optimization. The approach captures several production-critical considerations for project stakeholders, such as determining optimal locations for electrolytic production powered by renewables and assessing trade-offs between proximity to demand clusters and regions abundant in renewable energy sources. The model addresses other crucial questions: • Where should supply be located to meet specific demand? • What is the optimal solar/wind energy ratio and capacity oversizing? • How much hydrogen storage is necessary? • Should electricity or hydrogen be transported nearer to demand clusters? • How do blue and green hydrogen solutions compete? • What impact do policies have on achieving the ideal energy mix? While the paper focuses on Texas and Louisiana, the model is versatile and can analyze any global region, regardless of scale. I’m excited to announce Powerhouse Ventures’ newest portfolio company, Sesame Sustainability, the industrial decarbonization platform. Heavy industry is responsible for 34% of total global emissions. While there are many technological, financial, and regulatory tailwinds favoring industrial decarbonization, industrial companies won’t make decisions to decarbonize without understanding the economic and environmental implications of those decisions. Sesame Sustainability’s platform offers techno-economic analysis and environmental modeling based on fundamental physics and chemistry for several decarbonization pathways, starting with hydrogen. Its analyses are highly credible, use standardized methodologies across decarbonization pathways, and enable customers to conduct iterative scenario analysis at scale. This milestone would not have been possible without the hard work and passion of our team and the support of our amazing investors: Flybridge and Powerhouse Ventures. The industrial sector accounts for 34% of global greenhouse gas emissions. While commercial and regulatory pressures mount, the leaders of industrial companies struggle to plan and enact deep decarbonization initiatives. Solutions that currently exist in the market are slow and don’t adequately address the considerable complexity related to industrial decarbonization technologies. Spinning out of MIT, Sesame’s software suite simulates and optimizes the costs and emissions associated with decarbonization investments in heavy industry. As part of our Design Partner Program, Sesame Sustainability is already working with global energy companies like JERA Americas to prioritize their decarbonization investments.
