  • Project Comms was joined by accomplished filmmaker, editor, and documentarian Andrès Arias for a talk about storytelling and creative decision-making. The boys participated in a still-frame organizing activity, featuring the Spanish black-and-white film Blancanieves, showcasing the magic of editing and how simple arrangements of the same images can tell a thousand stories. Members were encouraged not only to view the films they watched, but to analyze what elements made them impactful. After breaking down scenes from his own work, like the documentary Brimstone and Glory, Andrès tasked members with creating their own one-minute short films. These films will help them learn to construct and refine impactful narratives. Thank you, Andrès, for an engaging session. Project Comms looks forward to taking these lessons in narrative construction and applying them to our upcoming short films. We can’t wait to show you our work! Learn more about Andrès Arias upcoming work, Barrio Television. Directed by Christina DiPasquale, Barrio Television is the untold story of Puerto Rican activists who created the first bilingual public affairs series for Latinos on national television in a fight for authentic stories and media power- a struggle that continues to this day.

  • Thank you to Dorothy from Alveole Buzz for giving an informative lecture on bees and honey at Abbe Clubhouse! Members played a trivia game about what they learned and received personal honey jars. Dorothy visits Abbe every 3 weeks to manage the bees on the rooftop producing honey, which is how BCNY can distribute their very own.  Alveole Buzz provides urban beekeeping and environmental education to create a #BetterPlanet that bridges the gap between real estate and biodiversity. Thank you, Dorothy, and we look forward to tasting our homemade BCNY honey!

  • Project Comms members enjoyed a special visit with guest speaker Audrea Lim, a renowned writer, author, journalist, and climate activist discussed her journey toward becoming a published author and freelance journalist. She also shared tips on the interviewing process and research methods she uses in her work.      Audrea spoke about factors that make up good writing: the who, what, where, and when- the facts and especially the how and why, which makes the story compelling. Project Comms then tested their interviewing skills on Audrea, where she shared more on her work as a musician, growing up in Calgary as a child of immigrants, and her move to New York City 18 years ago to attend TheNewSchool where she received her MA in Philosophy.    Project Comms thanks Audrea for taking the time to talk about her fascinating career and her adventures as a professional writer. Check out her latest book published by St. Martin's Press “Free the Land: How We Can Fight Poverty and Climate Chaos.”    This caption was written by Project Comms members Kevin and Benjamin. • Today, Project Comms members tested their photography skills in Washington Square Park. As any New Yorker would know, this is a great landmark for photos, with something always going on in the park. BCNY is happy to have members who are excited and motivated to learn photography. We look forward to seeing their edited content.    These photos were shot by the talented Isaiah A.

  • Today, Project Comms participated in a public speaking seminar by Chrysti Cook! Chrysti, founder and CEO of The Social Construct , having led a life in social media, emphasized the importance of engagement, confidence, and preparation in communications and social media.    She engaged members with group activities, including impromptu storytelling, partner interviews, and a compelling presentation on public speaking skills. Chrysti also encouraged members to face and learn from challenges -- she gained success in social media by overcoming her fear of public speaking. Chrysti says that through challenging experiences, members will be open to opportunities that can help them become more successful.    Members are thankful to hear her impressive stories on her journey through social media and are grateful for the opportunity to help discuss the importance of public speaking!    Caption written by Project Comms member, Kevin L.

  • In partnership with NYC Pride, BCNY members Caleb Lee and Alex attended Youth Pride last weekend.    Featuring music, carnival games, glam and wellness tents, and educational resources, Youth Pride establishes a safe space for queer youth in a time when their autonomy is threatened on state and federal levels, as explained by NYC Pride’s co-chair Kazz Alexander Pinkard in an interview with USA TODAY. We are proud of Caleb and Alex for working so hard to help make the visions of NYC Pride a success this year and fostering an environment where all boys and young men feel safe.   #BCNYPROUD #PrideMonth
