"There's a child care center in Virginia with a waitlist of over 400 kids. They can't afford to hire more early educators to fill those classrooms without raising costs for families. The only solution is federal funding" The shortage of affordable child care in the US is hurting our kids, workers, and economy. We need real solutions to build up our child care supply and create good paying jobs for early educators. Laura Valle-Gutierrez spoke with NewsNation about how we get there:

As students head back to school this week, billions in COVID relief funds are running out, and public schools are bracing to shrink their budgets down to pre-pandemic levels—or even lower. For many school districts, the budget crunch will force tough choices including potential teacher layoffs, and cuts to essential programs like tutoring, after-school activities, and summer learning. In Slate Magazine, Conor Williams analyzes how relief funds helped schools sustain during the pandemic, and what's at risk when they expire: https://lnkd.in/drm2B-Yi

Approval for organized labor is at a near-record high—and it's no surprise why: Americans are tired of corporations hoarding profits while workers struggle. Organized labor helps to level the playing field, delivering better wages, benefits, and opportunities for everyone. Just look at the numbers: ✊ Unionized workers with disabilities earn 29.8% more on average than comparable nonunion workers with disabilities. ✊ Hispanic union members earn 18.8% more than Hispanic nonunion members. ✊ Black union members earn 13.1% more on average than comparable Black nonunion workers. ✊ Nonunion women workers earn, on average, 78% of what men earn, while unionized women workers earn 94% of what men earn. “The child care crisis has put my family in an impossibly stressful situation.” Moms with young children are now the fastest-growing segment of the workforce, but they are facing an unprecedented crisis. Child care costs are skyrocketing, waitlists are years long, early educators are some of the lowest-paid workers in the country, and child care centers in many communities are closing. But it doesn't have to be this way. Our new report with MomsRising.org, National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), & Center for American Progress unpacks the consequences of our child care crisis on parents and providers, and calls for Congress to give families the support they need. https://lnkd.in/dyYiat-D

After nearly a decade of leadership, TCF President Mark Zuckerman will step down in March 2025. TCF has experienced transformational growth during Mark's tenure—tripling our budget, doubling our staff, and expanding our influence on Capitol Hill. We've built diverse, impactful policy teams, secured major victories like protecting the ACA and securing $800B+ in pandemic aid, and launched Next100 to champion a new generation of policy leaders. Our Board of Trustees will oversee the leadership transition, with a new president expected by early spring. We are deeply grateful for Mark’s visionary leadership and commitment to making policy work for people. Read the full announcement: https://bit.ly/3XlJaQe
