🧠 We recently hosted two groups of enthusiastic learners at our back-to-back stereotaxic surgery workshops at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine! This popular workshop gives participants hands-on training in stereotaxic surgery in laboratory mice, including how to read a Vernier scale, use a brain atlas, collect cerebrospinal fluid, and successfully perform brain injections, brain cannulations, and bilateral brain cannulations. This month marked the end of my time in the Summer Student Program at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. While working in the O'Connell lab, I learned countless skills and techniques that showed me what it means to be a researcher within the field of neuroscience. I would like to thank Amy Dunn and Kristen O'Connell for their close mentorship during my time at the lab. They helped me develop a successful project analyzing the impact of a high-fat diet on the proteome and metabolome of the hippocampus within multiple strains of mice. I discovered significant results related to downregulation of neuroprotective metabolites, enrichment of multiple metabolic pathways, along with dysregulation of important synaptic and neuronal cytoskeleton-related protein systems. This experience was truly the opportunity of a lifetime for me, as it allowed me to grow as a scientist while in the company of many peers and mentors all working towards similar goals. I will be continuing with the O'Connell lab as an undergraduate research fellow during the academic year in order to move my research towards a publication. After my time at JAX, I feel an emboldened sense of motivation to obtain a PhD in Neuroscience.
