Scientific research has demonstrated that spending time in nature (such as in a local forest) has a panoply of benefits for humans. These benefits include everything from decreases of the things we don’t want to increases of the things we do want. “Nature dose” causes a decrease in depression, dejection, anger, frustration, hostility & stress. Time spent in the park reduces aggression & confusion while increasing self-esteem, productivity, & conviviality. Research conducted by King's College London shows that the level of biodiversity humans interact with affects the benefits of being in nature. The research spanned 5 years and 41,000 assessments. It used smartphones to ask the 1,998 participants about their environment and then asked a series of questions about their mental health. 💭 Increased biodiversity = increased mental health benefits Lead researcher, Ryan Hammoud, points to the significance this research has on how we manage public spaces. “In practice, this means moving away from heavily curated monocultural pockets and parks of mown grass, which are typically associated with low biodiversity, towards spaces which mirror the biodiversity of natural ecosystems” #naturepositive #mentalhealth #biodiversity
