Overview
Through a group reading of the childrens story Iggy Peck Architect by Andrea
Beaty students will learn about what an architect does, through a discussion
about the process of designing and building structures.

What does an architect do?


What are blueprints?
What kind of paper does an architect use to draw their designs on?
(Ex. on the cover and the first 2 pages of the book)
Identify some of the famous structures in the book (Ex. Sphinx,
Leaning Tower of Pisa, Sydney Opera House).
What is a suspension bridge?
What is a trestle?
How does Iggy solve the problem of the washed away bridge?

Students 1,2, and 3 will be able


to verbally answer questions
about the book, as well as point
to images in the book.
Students 4, 5, and 6 will be able
to point to images in the book as
a way of answering questions
about the book, and show
understanding.

Curriculum Connections

3-3: Students will investigate a practical problem, and develop a


possible solution.

Activities
Students will listen to a group reading of Iggy Peck Architect and engage in a
class discussion about what an architect does.

Assessment
Students will be able to identify images in the text and answer questions about
the book (both verbally and non-verbally). As this reading is an introduction to
the unit, I will be using my questions as a way of building a scaffold of prior
knowledge that I can build upon in future lessons.
