Boost Power customer review

Boost Power came joint bottom (along with Scottish Power) out of 16 energy companies rated by 9,025 members of the public in the annual Which? energy companies customer satisfaction survey.

It has slipped down from mid-table in last year's survey, and is one percentage point below parent company Ovo Energy

Customers weren't over-impressed with any aspect of Boost Power's service, rating it two stars across the board.

One customer said: 'It was just, like, average, nothing stood out to me.' Another more satisfied customer said: 'The app is easy to use and I can top up at any time.'

Which? verdict on Boost Power

  • Pros: Reasonably good at supporting vulnerable customers
  • Cons: Customers find all aspects of the service underwhelming.

Our Boost Power supplier assessment

In October 2023 we looked at four aspects of suppliers' business practices and procedures:

  • customer service - including how and when you can get in touch, and the quality of self-service help online
  • how well they deal with complaints - how many complaints suppliers get and how quickly they resolve them
  • supporting customers who need it - including web accessibility, those in vulnerable situations, in financial difficulty, who use prepayment meters,  and those who need materials in languages besides English
  • smart meter targets performance in 2022 (the most recent)

We did this using a combination of the responses to a survey we sent to suppliers and our own assessments.

Boost Power came joint 15th out of 18 providers for its supplier score with a 60%. It performed reasonably well in how it supports vulnerable customers, achieving a score of 8 out of 10 – the same as its parent company Ovo - but achieved a bottom-of-the-table zero out of 10 for its performance against smart meter targets.

Boost Power customer service

Boost Power received just two stars for customer service in our customer survey.

It fared marginally better in our supplier assessment of its customer service with a score of 9 out of 15 (60%), but scored lower than its parent company Ovo, which scored 11.

Boost Power common complaints

In our survey, 18% of customers said they had contacted Boost Power in the previous 12 months to make a formal complaint. That's twice as many as the next highest percentage of complaints (100Green, 9%) and nine times the lowest level of complaints (Co-op Energy and Octopus Energy, both 2%).

Does Boost Power support prepayment meters?

Yes. Boost Power supplies customers with prepayment meters only. You can join Boost Power whether you have a traditional pay-as-you-go meter or a smart one. Some smart meters will lose their smart features when you switch – Boost Power says it will check if you have a compatible smart meter before you switch.

  • If you don't already have a smart prepayment meter, Boost Power can install one for you.
  • Once you have a smart prepayment meter, you can top up using the Boost Power app as well as at PayPoint shops.
  • The app also lets you check your balance and schedule automatic top-ups.
  • Boost Power offers £15 emergency credit for each fuel if you can't top up in time. You'll pay back any emergency credit you've used when you next top-up.

Proportion of renewable electricity according to Boost Power's 2021/2022 fuel mix. Other responses based on information provided by suppliers in August 2023.

In August 2023, we asked energy companies for information on a range of sustainability criteria. We awarded them points based on their responses as well as information published on their websites, including the annual Fuel Mix Disclosure (FMD). Aspects we scored included how much of the electricity they supply is renewable and whether they generate renewable energy or buy it directly from generators.

Boost Power is part of Ovo Energy, which launched its Plan Zero sustainability strategy in 2019 with the aim of driving progress to zero carbon living.

It told us: 'In 2022 we refreshed our strategy to strengthen our commitment to decarbonisation (by reducing our reliance on offsets to achieve a net zero position from 40% to 10%) and calling out our focus on customers and vulnerability as it's own pillar of the strategy.' When we compared energy companies on their green credentials in November 2023, Boost Power scored 10%. This places it near the bottom of our table of the 17 companies we rated.
