Are cordless mowers heavy?

Though they're generally much lighter than petrol-powered models, there are some cordless models on the market that weigh upwards of 30kg. If you think you might struggle to push around something bulky like a large cordless mower or a petrol one, opt for models with a smaller cutting width or with a self-propelled drive.

You can use the filters on our lawn mower reviews page to find cordless models that will suit you - opt for the 'small' or 'medium' lawn size option to filter out heavier models with larger cutting widths, or select 'it is self-propelled' in the features filter to find models with a drive.

How long do cordless lawn mowers batteries last?

Of the cordless mowers we've reviewed, we've found an average battery life of 22 minutes - though there's a huge amount of variation between models, and little correlation between things like cutting width and battery life. On the lower end, we've seen models with a measly 10 minutes of juice - and at the top, models with over 40 minutes of autonomy.

Generally, a cordless mower battery will last comfortably over five years. When we surveyed almost 4,000 lawn mower owners in early 2024, we found that on average, 10% of cordless mowers developed a fault within the first five years of use. Of these faults, 45% were related to the battery failing to charge or failing to hold a charge.

To maximise your battery's lifespan, it's best to store it indoors, away from any extremes of temperature. In the off-season, you should make sure that you charge it up a few times, even though you’re not using it. If you allow the battery to deplete and stay at 0% charge, it may subsequently fail to hold any charge at all when you come to use it again.

Thankfully, if the battery does permanently die, you should be able to buy and use a replacement to get your mower up and running again.

Are cordless electric models any good?

The short answer is yes - in fact, of the 12 highest-rated mowers currently on our site, six of them are cordless models.

There are some cordless models you should avoid, as we've tested models that scored as low as 47% thanks to a dismal cutting performance, but with a decent average test score of 65% as well as plenty of Best Buy and Great Value options, cordless mowers are definitely worth considering.

Why you can trust our cordless lawn mower reviews

Unlike many other reviewers, we buy every lawn mower that we test. In other words, you can be sure our in-depth, expert reviews are honest and impartial.

For every lawn mower we test, we pay attention to the features that are important for your garden. We take a look at how well the mower will cut your grass and whether or not it leaves grass clippings behind.

We also measure lawn mowers on ease of use, which means checking their weight, how easy they are to assemble and disassemble, plus how convenient the controls are.

While some gardeners are still hesitant to adopt cordless tools, advances in lithium-ion battery technology are addressing many concerns. Modern cordless models are powerful enough for most gardening tasks, and we continue to see longer runtimes and faster charging.
