The film ‘Barbie’ may be bathed in pink, but make no mistake, Greta Gerwig’s frothy satire about gender roles, is the talk of the town, not for subverting gender tropes, but for painting the town green (the colour of dollars)!

The Margot Robbie-Ryan Gosling starrer has reportedly crossed a whopping $500 million at the global box-office.

According to a Collider report, the comedy-drama has crossed the $500 million mark, raking in an astounding $290 million at the overseas box-office. The movie minted $40 million in the UK, $25 million in Brazil, and $15 million in China.

As per Collider, two things has made 'Barbie' a smash hit across borders. One, the iconic Mattel doll has been a cultural phenomenon and a part of many women's childhood. Moreover, underneath the pink-tinged comedy, the movie actually promotes progressive ideals of gender and breaking across stereotypes, female empowerment and also explores themes of existentialism.

Directed by Gerwig (of 'Little Women' and 'Lady Bird' fame), 'Barbie' revolves around the iconic doll who undertakes a journey to the "real world" with her loyal sidekick Ken to rediscover herself, as she experiences her first brush with mortality, develops cellulite and discovers her feet have gone flat. As she encounters a world, drastically different from her pink-tinged matriarchy, Barbie learns just how protected and charmed existence she has led till date.

The movie boasts of a stellar ensemble cast. Led by Gosling and Robbie, the movie features veterans such as Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Michael Cera, Simu Liu etc.
