Apple will continue to strengthen Lockdown Mode and add new protections to it over time.
Apple takes user security and privacy very seriously. With each new update, the features on Apple devices get stronger and more apt. 2022 is looking like the era of great changes for the tech company as it prepares to release the next big upgrade for iPhones - iOS 16.

The tech giant is all set to launch the new operating software in September this year, which will come packed with 'Lockdown Mode'.

The upcoming feature will enhance the security of users and protect their data from targetted spyware who try to sneak into the user's call history and chats to retrieve crucial data.

Apple detailed two initiatives to help protect users who may be personally targeted by some of the most sophisticated digital threats, such as those from private companies developing state-sponsored mercenary spyware.

'Lockdown Mode', the first major capability of its kind, coming this fall with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura — is an extreme, optional protection for the very small number of users who face grave, targeted threats to their digital security.

    How Does It Work?
The highly-anticipated feature, 'Lockdown Mode', offers extra layer of security for a select few people who, because of who they are or what they do, may be personally targeted by some of the most sophisticated digital threats such as those from NSO Group and other private companies developing state-sponsored mercenary spyware.

'Lockdown Mode' hardens your device's defenses and strictly limits certain functionalities.

    What It Protects:
The upcoming feature included in iOS 16 will block most message attachment other than images. Features like link previews are also disabled.

In regards to what you browse on your device, certain complex web technologies, like just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation, are disabled unless the user excludes a trusted site from 'Lockdown Mode'.

Incoming invitations and service requests, including FaceTime calls, are blocked if the user has not previously sent the initiator a call or request.

Wired connections with a computer or accessory are blocked when iPhone is locked. Configuration profiles cannot be installed, and the device cannot enroll into mobile device management (MDM), while 'Lockdown Mode' is turned on.

Apple will continue to strengthen 'Lockdown Mode' and add new protections to it over time.
