    Australia vs South Africa semi-final: Rain halts match. What are World Cup rules on extra time and reserve day?

    Rains have disrupted the second semi-final between Australia and South Africa played at Kolkata's Eden Gardens. The ICC has adapted match rules, including an extra reserve day and extended extra time for semi-finals and finals. If the match is abandoned, the higher-ranked team from the league stage.

    Rain has halted the semi-final match between Australia and South Africa, being played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Weather forecasters say that rain may play spoilsport as a deep depression has formed over Bay of Bengal. For the semi-finals and finals, ICC has modified match rules to keep the provision of an extra reserve day and more extra time. On Wednesday, India beat New Zealand by 70 runs and will meet the winner of Australia-South Africa match in Ahmedabad on Sunday in the final. Group matches did not have the reserve day provisions. At the end of 14 overs, South Africa were 44 for the loss of four wickets.

    What if the Australia vs South Africa match is abandoned

    If the semi-final match is abandoned due to rains and a there no result at the end of the reserve day, then the team which finished in the higher position in the league stage will proceed to the final. Even though both Australia and South Africa finished with 14 points after their group stage, South Africa are ahead in terms of run rate. If no match is held due to rains, then South Africa will move to the finals.

    Extra Time Rule for Semi-Final

    Semi-finals and final have got 120 minutes of extra time for the completion of match on the scheduled day vs 60 minutes for normal group match. This extra time rule will also be applicable for the reserve day also. If play is interrupted on the scheduled day, the umpires can use the extra time provision and, if necessary, reduce the number of overs to try to achieve a result on that day. For a result to be achieved on the scheduled day, each team must get to bat for a minimum of 20 overs for a result to be achieved.

    Reserve Day Rules

    If the result is not achieved today due to rains (both sides bat a minimum of 20 overs), then the match goes into the reserve day. Friday for completion. On the Reserve Day, play shall resume at the point where the last ball was played on the scheduled day. If the semi-finals or finals are tied after both the innings, then there will be Super Over. If a Super Over is a tie, then unlimited Super Overs will be played until there is a winner.
