Himachal govt releases Rs 153 cr under market intervention scheme for apple growers
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that the state government has released Rs 153 crore under the market intervention scheme (MIS) to clear the liabilities of apple growers. The amount also includes the hefty burden of Rs 90 crore left by the previous government, the chief minister said during his visit to Narkanda in Shimla district.
He said that the previous government had halted subsidies on apple pesticides, fertilizers and other products important for carrying out agriculture and horticulture works. But the present government "reinstated the subsidy immediately, ensuring both reach and availability of quality products to farmers".

'Black box': Rahul, Akhilesh question credibility of EVMs
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said EVMs in India are a "black box" which nobody is allowed to scrutinise, and asserted that "serious concerns" are being raised about transparency in the country's electoral process. Congress' ally and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also questioned credibility of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and demanded that all future elections should be conducted through ballot papers.

Authorities issued evacuation orders Saturday as a wildfire in Los Angeles County spread thousands of acres close to a major highway and threatened nearby structures, officials said. The blaze that is being called the Post Fire burned more than 3,600 acres (5.6 square miles or 14.5 square kilometers) near the Interstate 5 freeway in Gorman, which is about 62 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The flames broke out at around 1:45 pm, authorities said. The Los Angeles County Fire Department did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on the evacuations, whether there were injuries reported and the latest size of the blaze. The U.S. military unleashed a wave of attacks targeting radar sites operated by Yemen’s Houthi rebels after one merchant sailor went missing and the vessel he was on caught fire in the latest Houthi strike on shipping in the crucial Red Sea corridor, authorities said Saturday. The attacks come as the U.S. Navy faces the most intense combat it has seen since World War II in trying to counter the Houthi campaign — attacks the rebels say are meant to halt the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.
