The U.N. nuclear watchdog's 35-nation Board of Governors passed a resolution calling on Iran to step up cooperation with the watchdog and reverse its recent barring of inspectors despite concerns Tehran would respond with atomic escalation. KKR was the same team last year and you see the difference that he made this year. He is a shrewd tactician as well. I am sure with all his experience — he has won two World Cup (wins) as a player — that will really add value. He is a good candidate, but it all depends upon BCCI who they want. "My equation with Rahul Dravid.....": Indian skipper Rohit ahead of T20 WC opener against Ireland

    • Ahead of his side's ICC T20 World Cup opening match against Ireland, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma reflected on his bond with head coach Rahul Dravid, for who this tournament will be last as the head coach.
    • India, the inaugural T20 World Cup champions from 2007, will be kickstarting their campaign against Ireland in their group A clash. The Men in Blue will be hoping to win the whole thing and secure their first International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy since 2013's ICC Champions Trophy win.
    • Ahead of the match in the pre-match press conference, Rohit said that his bond with Dravid goes way long back to when he was breaking into Team India in the late 2000s and he was his first captain.
    • "My equation with Rahul Dravid is very good. He is my first captain. I played under him, He is such a big role model for all of us. I have seen him play when I was just coming into the team. He has shown a lot of determination in his career, taken us out of difficult situations. I try to convince him to continue as a coach. I will not be able to see him go. It has been fruitful working with him, I enjoyed every bit of it," he said.
    • On the pitch invasion that took place during the side's warm-up match against Bangladesh where a fan approached to meet him but was caught by police, Rohit said that no one should be entering the ground.
    • "Players' security is important. Even the security of fans is important. You have to respect the rules of a country," he added.
    • On playing in almost alien conditions in the USA, Rohit said that conditions are unknown to all the teams and the team will be focusing on what it needs to do rather than their opponent.
    • "The conditions are quite unknown for a lot of teams. That is the same for all. You just have to play good cricket. We are not going to look into the opposition that we are playing. The important thing for us is what we are going to do with the bat, ball and field. You do look into their strengths, weakness and team composition, but that is it," said Rohit.
    • On the slow surface of the Nassau County Stadium where India will be playing their campaign opener and where Sri Lanka and South Africa played a low-scoring match on Monday, Rohit said that he got to know how the pitch was playing through his teammates and the support staff.
    • "There is uncertainty about the pitches we will play on, the outfield. Maybe the pitch we play on would be a good one. It is about adapting quickly. We know what to do as a batting and bowling group on different surfaces. We will keep an eye on all these aspects and decide what is best combination for us, we have got seamers, spinners etc," he added.
    • Rohit said that the Men in Blue is coming into the competition after a high-scoring Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and are well aware that the same conditions and high-scoring games would not take place here.
    • "We have to be a little mindful and see what is the best we can do. We have a lot of experience with batters who play outside India. We hope they can apply themselves and use it to their advantage. We are coming off a heavy-scoring IPL, we will have to understand what is going to happen here. You will have to assess things as quickly as possible," he added.
    • India Squad: Rohit Sharma(c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube

US commends India on 'successfully completing massive electoral undertaking', hopes for "continued close partnership"

    • US on Tuesday (local time) commended India on completing the world's largest electoral exercise - 2024 Lok Sabha polls spread over 44 days starting from April 19-June 1, and hoped for "continued close partnership" between the two countries after NDA's third consecutive win - Modi 3.0.
    • US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller in the briefing said, "I expect a continued close partnership between the United States and India. There is a great partnership both at the government level and at the people-to-people level, and I fully expect that to continue," on being asked how will be US-India relations after Modi 3.0.
    • The BJP-led NDA is poised to win 291 seats and the INDIA bloc 234 with the election turning out to be much closer than predicted by the exit polls which gave a huge majority to the ruling alliance at the Centre. Other parties are slated to win 18 seats.
    • Miller said that the US will wait for the final election results before offering any definitive comment. Notably, as per the Election Commission of India counting of votes is still going on with two seats yet to be declared in the 543 member Lok Sabha seats, with a majority mark of 272.
    • "The election results have not been finalised. So we will wait for the finalisation of those election results before we offer any definitive comment. I'm also not going to comment on winners and losers in elections, as in our case around the world, what is important for us and what we have seen over the past six weeks is the largest exercise of democracy in history as the Indian people came to the polls," he said.
    • Miller further commended the Indian government and the voters for participating in such a massive electoral undertaking.
    • "On behalf of the United States, we want to commend the Government of India and the voters there for successfully completing and participating in such a massive electoral undertaking. We look forward to seeing the final results...," he said.
    • Answering the media on External Affairs Minister Jaishankar's indication that the Western side has made attempts to influence India's elections, Miller said that, in no way, they attempted to influence the election.
    • "We always express our views clearly and openly. We express them with foreign governments privately, and when we have things that we are concerned about, we also express them publicly, including from this podium. That's what I've done. But that, in no way, is an attempt to influence an election in India or anywhere else," he stressed.
    • In his remarks, after most of the results came in the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the BJP-led NDA will form its third successive government and that it is the victory of the resolve of Viksit Bharat, of 'Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas' and of the strong faith of people in India's Constitution.
    • PM Modi said at the party's central office that it is the first time after 1962 that a government that completed two full tenures has got a third successive term in office. He said "new history" has been created after six decades. (ANI)

T20 WC: Max ODowd's half-century helps Netherlands clinch 6-wicket win over Nepal

    • Right-handed batter Max ODowd's half-century helped the Netherlands clinch a six-wicket win over Nepal in the 7th match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.
    • Max ODowd (54* runs from 48 balls, 4 fours and 1 six) showcased a stunning performance in the second inning as he helped the Dutch side chase down the target successfully. ODowd played at a strike rate of 112.50 and added crucial runs on the scoreboard.
    • Vikramjit Singh (22 runs from 28 balls, 4 fours) was the second-highest run-getter for the Netherlands against Nepal. Singh's partnership with Max played a crucial in the game.
    • Even though they lost the match, Nepal were stupendous with the ball in the second inning. Rohit Paudel's side gave a low-scoring target of 109 runs but they made sure the Dutch side found it difficult to add runs.
    • The Nepal bowling attack failed to scalp early wickets which cost them the match. Sompal Kami, Dipendra Singh Airee, and Abinash Bohara picked up three wickets in their respective spells.
    • Recapping the first inning of the match, after winning the toss, the Dutch side opted to field first against Nepal and their decision did go in their favour as they were successful in bundling Nepal's batting lineup.
    • Kushal Bhurtel (7 runs from 10 balls, 1 four) and Aasif Sheikh (4 runs from 8 balls, 1 four) opened for Nepal and displayed a sloppy performance.
    • The wickets started to fall from the second over after Tim Pringle made the first breakthrough of the match when he removed Aasif from the crease.
    • Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel (35 runs from 37 balls, 5 fours) was the only standout batter for them as he was the highest run scorer among his teammates.
    • Apart from Paudel, Gulsan Jha (14 runs from 15 balls, 1 six) and Karan KC (17 runs from 12 balls, 2 sixes) were the other run-getters for Nepal.
    • The Dutch bowling attack dominated the game from the very first moment of the first inning, stopping Nepal from scoring runs. Both Pringle and Van Beek picked up three wickets in their respective spells.
    • Paul van Meekeren and Bas de Leede bagged two wickets in their respective spells and stopped Nepal at 106 in the 19.2th over of the match.
    • Brief score: Nepal 106 (Rohit Paudel 36, Karan KC 17, Gulsan Jha 14; Logan van Beek 3/18) vs Netherlandsm 109/4 (Max ODowd 54*, Vikramjit Singh 22, Sybrand Engelbrecht 14; Sompal Kami 1/18). (ANI)

Slovenia recognizes a Palestinian state, and new fighting flares in central Gaza

    • Slovenia is the latest European country to recognize a Palestinian state. The country’s parliament voted Tuesday in support of the move, following in the recent steps of Spain, Ireland and Norway.
    • Slovenia's prime minister has said he sped up efforts to recognize a State of Palestine in reaction to Israel's expanding invasion of the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The monthlong offensive has largely cut off the flow of food, medicine and other supplies to Palestinians who are facing widespread hunger.
    • In central Gaza, the Israeli military said Tuesday that its troops backed by airstrikes have launched a ground operation into the Bureij refugee camp. Local hospital officials say a strike in the urban camp killed 11 Palestinians, including three children and a woman.
    • The Israeli airstrikes and ground offensives across the Gaza Strip come as international mediators wait for Israel and Hamas to respond to a new cease-fire and hostage release proposal, according to Qatar, which has played a key role in negotiations alongside Egypt and the United States.
    • Announcing the proposal last week, U.S. President Joe Biden said the three-phase plan was Israeli, however Israeli leaders have since appeared to distance themselves from the proposal and vowed to keep fighting Hamas until the group is destroyed.
    • Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.
    • Israel launched the war in Gaza after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, in which militants stormed into southern Israel, killed some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducted about 250. Around 80 hostages captured on Oct. 7 are believed to still be alive in Gaza, alongside the remains of 43 others. (AP)
