Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase 2 Live: IMD issues heat wave warning for several states

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase 2 Updates Live: The upcoming second phase of the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 poses a challenge to voters as they contend with scorching temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in several states including West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh over the next five days.

A red warning has been issued for West Bengal and Odisha, while Bihar and parts of Karnataka are under an orange alert. Additionally, high humidity levels may exacerbate discomfort for people in Tripura, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Assam, Meghalaya, and Goa.On Friday, voters in 88 Lok Sabha constituencies across 13 states and Union Territories will cast their ballots.

The affected regions include Kerala with 20 seats, 14 in Karnataka, 13 in Rajasthan, eight each in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, six in Madhya Pradesh, five each in Bihar and Assam, three each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, and one each in Tripura, Jammu and Kashmir, and Manipur. Some temporary relief from the heat is expected in parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh due to high-velocity winds, light rain, and thunderstorms.

This ongoing heatwave spell marks the second occurrence this month. Odisha has been experiencing heatwave conditions since April 15, while Gangetic West Bengal has been affected since April 17.The IMD has also warned of warm night conditions in Odisha from April 27-29, which can pose health risks as the body doesn't adequately cool down during the night. Urban areas are particularly susceptible to rising nighttime temperatures due to the urban heat island effect.

Heatwave conditions are declared when the maximum temperature reaches certain thresholds, with severe heat waves declared if the departure from normal temperatures exceeds a specific range.Amid weakening El Nino conditions, the IMD has previously cautioned about extreme heat during the April-June period, coinciding with the Lok Sabha elections.

The first phase of voting took place on April 19.Expectations for increased heatwave days in April and the April-June period raise concerns about strain on power grids and water shortages in various parts of India. Additionally, global weather agencies anticipate the development of La Nina conditions later in the year, which could influence the monsoon season and significantly impact agricultural activities and water resources across the country.
