Pakistan Election Results 2024 Highlights: Pakistan ex-PM Imran Khan's party says it aims to form government
Pakistan Election Results 2024 Highlights: Candidates backed by the party of jailed Pakistani opposition leader Imran Khan plan to form a government, a senior aide to the former prime minister said on Saturday, urging supporters to peacefully protest if final election results are not released.

The South Asian nation of 241 million people voted on Thursday in a general election, as the country struggles to recover from an economic crisis and battles militant violence in a deeply polarised political environment.

Both Khan and his main rival, three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, declared victory on Friday, increasing uncertainty over who will form the next government at a time when swift policy action is needed to address multiple challenges.

Gohar Khan, the chairman of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-Insaf (PTI) party who also acts as the former prime minister's lawyer, called on "all institutions" in Pakistan to respect his party's mandate.

At a press conference, he said if complete results of the polls were not released by Saturday night, the party would hold peaceful protests on Sunday outside government offices returning election results around the country.

Pakistan Election Results 2024 Live: Allies of jailed ex-PM Khan take half-way lead in Pakistan vote count

Candidates loyal to jailed former prime minister Imran Khan edged ahead in Pakistan's election Friday, in front of the two dynastic parties believed favoured by the military with just over half the count completed.
Khan was barred from contesting Thursday's election and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was subject to a sweeping crackdown -- blocked from holding rallies and taken off the ballot, forcing candidates to run as independents.

But the latest results in a slow counting process showed PTI loyalists had so far won around 49 seats in the 266-member national assembly, against 42 for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and 34 for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), with just over half of constituencies called.

Most of the seats won by PTI-backed candidates were in its stronghold of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while results were still coming in for the most populous province of Punjab, won by PTI in the last election but where the family of former premier Nawaz Sharif's PML-N have historically held sway.

Unofficial tallies on local TV stations had independents in the lead for many of the remaining seats up for grabs.

Pakistan Election Results 2024 Live: Imran Khan's party continues to dominate Pakistan politics, says Foreign Affairs Expert

Defence expert Qamar Agha said that the lead for independent candidates backed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party reflected the distrust of the people towards the country's army. He noted that the Pakistani army's main supporters, like Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamaat-ul-Ilema Islam had lost support among the people.

PTI has managed to win so many seats despite its leaders, including PTI founder Imran Khan, being in prison.

Speaking to ANI, Agha said that despite Imran Khan being in jail, , candidates backed by his party had managed to win so many seats, as per projections reported by local media.

Agha said, "It's very surprising because the impression which was coming in and the realization in the army that they have managed to suppress the Imran Khan supporters and those forces, but that has not happened. They continue to dominate Pakistan's politics, you know. Despite of arrest of all these important leaders not even important leader, but ....several of them were arrested, despite of that, you know, they managed to get so many seats, it shows, you know, there is a hatred towards the army."

"And the problem with the army is not only the army is unpopular, but also its main supporters like Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamaat-ul-Ilema Islam has also lost a lot of support, following among the people because these are the organizations which provide legitimacy to the army and these are the organizations which have a very strong network among the villages and towns. They have also failed to mobilize support for their own parties and as well as for the Nawaz Sharif and others who were contesting election," he said

Pakistan Election Results 2024 Live: EC's new app faces hurdles

Pakistan's election commission's much-touted new app which was supposed to help officials to quickly tabulate and transmit election results faced significant challenges on Friday as the authorities were moving at a snail's pace to announce the result of the election amid allegations of rigging. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) prepared the Election Management System (EMS) app for transmission of results from each polling station to a centralised system where tabulation of all results would be completed by the Returning Offices, who are in charge of preparing and releasing the result of each constituency. However, the top electoral body's claim that it would ensure the timely announcement of results without depending on the internet fell flat on its face when the absence of connectivity brought forth a set of unexpected yet familiar challenges, mainly for Presiding Officers at a number of polling stations on Thursday evening, who found themselves unable to transmit the final results of their respective stations using the much-touted and homegrown system, the Dawn Newspaper reported. As a result, there has been an unusual delay in declaring the election results to the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies.

Pakistan Election Results 2024 Live: Imran Khan's party alleges mass rigging

As results to the Pakistan Election face delays amid slow counting of votes, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has alleged that the mandate of people of Pakistan is being stolen. Imran Khan's party said that every independent result showed PTI winning by a landslide despite pre-poll rigging and oppression.

PTI stated that votes of each candidate are tabulated at each polling station on the Form 45. Imran Khan's party emntioned that copies of these forms have been collected by PTI candidate's polling agents, which show them winning by large majority. However, returning officers are now manipulating the results using Form 47.

In a statement released on X, PTI stated, "Let the world know that the clear and overwhelming mandate of the people of Pakistan is being stolen. Despite unprecedented pre poll rigging & oppression, there was a record, massive turnout on polling day. Every independent result showed PTI winning by a landslide. Form 45s are the primary source of election results at the lowest level."

"The votes for each candidate are tabulated at each polling station on the Form 45. Copies of these forms have been collected by PTI candidates' polling agents, which show them winning by a large majority. However, Returning Officers are now manipulating the results using Form 47, which is a summary of all the Forms 45 from each polling station," it added.

PTI alleged that there are reports of the polling agents getting abducted and forced to sign fake Form 45s. Imran Khan's party said that it has video evidence of rigging. It said that the people of Pakistan would not accept the "rigged elections."
