Lonely Kalmadi wants OC mates in his Tihar cell

    Synopsis

NEW DELHI: In solitary confinement inside a 15x10 feet Tihar jail cell, Suresh Kalmadi spends his time watching TV and taking walks inside the premises. But it is the period between 6pm to 6am, when he is locked up in the cell, that is getting to him, the source said. It gets particularly bad on weekends, when no one is allowed to meet him.

His wife and son are allowed to meet him twice a week, each meeting lasting no more than one hour. Because he is diabetic, a doctor visits him to inject insulin.

The fallen sports czar was arrested on April 25 on charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy and corruption in awarding a Commonwealth Games contract to a Swiss firm at inflated rates, causing an alleged loss of Rs 95 crore to the exchequer. He maintains he has been falsely implicated.

His time in Tihar coincides with a season of high-profile inductees at the jail, the latest entrants being DMK leader Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar.

Sources said Kalmadi does not expect VIP treatment and follows jail rules like any other inmate. For someone used to freebies on jaunts during his stint as the chief of Indian Olympic Association, Kalmadi sparingly uses the coupon worth Rs 2,000 to buy food from the canteen. He makes a good show of not being bothered by the simple vegetarian fare served in the jail. It is reliably learnt that Kalmadi doesn't get food from his home.

Like other inmates, he gets up before 6am, stands in the queue to be counted and then has breakfast. He has lunch around 10am with a vegetarian dish, dal, rice and roti.

Tihar's capacity is 6,250. On an average 10,000 to 12,000 occupants are jailed, but presently, it is housing approximately 11,800 occupants. Because of the overcrowding, three to four undertrials and convicts share the size of the cell given to Kalmadi. But he wants Bhanot and Verma.
