    Government working to regulate AI: IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

    The government is working on regulation and legislations for artificial intelligence (AI) with a focus on containing the risks associated with the technology and implementing guard rails around AI, union minister for electronics and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

    The regulation for AI will need global coordination between like-minded countries, Vaishnaw said.

    "In India, we have understood that for many of the problems we face, AI can be a very big tool to solve problems. Simultaneously, we need to contain the risks," Vaishnaw said, while inaugurating the Global IndiaAI Summit 2024.

    The countries attending Global AI Summit will deliberate on various aspects of AI regulation over the next two days, Vaishnaw said.

    ET had on Wednesday reported that India had got other countries to agree to making the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) the apex body for all matters related to AI and its regulation. India is the current chair GPAI, a global initiative focused on responsible development and use of AI.

    The government will also invest in creating a state-run platform where compute power of up to 10,000 graphic processing units, high-quality datasets for training of AI models, a common framework among other resources will be made available to all.

    Speaking at the inaugural session, the minister of state for electronics and information technology Jitin Prasada said that countries need to come together to tackle the risks arising of AI since the technology was also a threat to democracies across the globe.
