Alakh Pandey, founder of test prep startup PhysicsWallah, has urged the Supreme Court to order an investigation into allegations of discrepancies in this year’s all-India medical entrance examination, NEET-UG 2024.

Pandey, who has been outspoken about the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate) (NEET-UG) examination controversy, has filed a public interest litigation in this regard and sought a probe into the matter by an independent committee.

The matter involves the awarding of grace marks by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to more than 1,500 students who appeared for NEET-UG 2024, and allegations that the question paper was leaked.

According to Pandey and his lawyer, only a thorough investigation can reveal the issues and irregularities undermining the credibility of the competitive entrance exam for undergraduate medical courses, the edtech said in a statement.

Pandey has also urged the court to order a re-examination.

“I believe in the court and our judiciary system. Our students will get justice,” Pandey wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

In a different plea filed in the Supreme Court over the alleged paper leak and irregularities in the NEET-UG examination, a vacation bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah said on Tuesday that post-exam counselling would not be stopped while issuing a notice to NTA.

In a statement, PhysicsWallah said, “Furthermore, recognising the impending commencement of the counselling process for the allocation of medical seats based on the contentious NEET rankings, Mr. Pandey and Mr. (J Sai) Deepak beseeched the Hon'ble Supreme Court to stay the counselling proceedings.”

“This stay is imperative to prevent further prejudice against the aggrieved candidates and to maintain the integrity of the admission process pending the resolution of this grave matter,” the statement said.

The plea against the NTA claims that the exam held on May 5 was conducted amid malpractices, including paper leaks.

ET had reported earlier that there are allegations of discrepancies in the results declared on June 4. The first rank was awarded to some 67 candidates, of which six were from the same centre in Haryana. Also, concerns have been raised regarding the allocation of grace marks to some candidates.

However, The NTA has denied the allegations and said that there were no irregularities.

ET had reported that according to NTA, the changes in the NCERT text books and awarding grace marks were the reasons for the high marks that some students received.

This year, some 2.4 million students had registered for the exam and 97% appeared for it.
