    Women personnel being appointed onboard warships: Govt in Lok Sabha

    Women personnel are being appointed onboard warships and as special naval air operation officers in the Indian Navy, according to Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt. He mentioned that permanent commission is being granted to women officers in various arms and services of the Army. The Indian Air Force's experimental scheme to induct women officers in all combat roles, initiated in 2015, was regularized in 2022 into a permanent one. The move reflects efforts to increase women's participation and roles in the armed forces.

    The number of women personnel employed in the three services excluding those in medical, dental and nursing services comes to 4,948.

    All recruitment to the Army Dental Corps (ADC) will henceforth be gender neutral and there will be no separate quotas for males and females, the government has told the Supreme court. The apex court had on April 11 frowned upon the recruitment to the ADC where just 10 per cent of vacancies were meant for women, observing it was like "putting the clock in reverse direction".

    The Indian armed forces have a shortage of about 155,000 personnel, with the army accounting for the largest number of vacancies at 136,000, according to Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt. The Navy is lacking 12,428 personnel, while there is a shortage of 7,031 personnel in the Air Force.

    Bhatt said employment in the Indian armed forces is gender neutral. "There is no distinction in the deployment and working conditions of male and female soldiers in the arms and services in which they serve," he said.
