The central government has given in-principle consent to the establishment of thermal power plant through THDCIL-UJVNL Energy Company Limited (TUECO), an official release here said. According to the SHAKTI policy, Coal India Limited can allow the supply of coal to the production companies of the central and state governments and their joint ventures at notified rates.

India's electricity consumption increased by nearly eight percent to 847 billion units in the first half of the fiscal year. Experts attribute the rise to a recovery in power demand and consumption in August onwards, driven by high humidity levels and increased use of cooling appliances. Peak power demand also reached a record high of 241 GW during April-September 2023. The power ministry had implemented measures to ensure adequate power supply, including running coal-powered plants at full capacity and importing coal for blending. India's installed power generation capacity stands at 424 GW, including coal-based, large hydro, and renewable sources.
