    Indian Railways on course to 100 per cent electrification, becoming world's largest green network

    India is making strides toward complete electrification of its rail network, with a dedicated budget of Rs 65,00 crore allocated for 2024-25. This move, highlighted by senior railway officials, follows the recent achievement of 95% electrification of the Broad Gauge. The electrification program not only benefits the environment but also spurs economic growth by creating jobs and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. The shift to electric traction is expected to cut carbon emissions by 24% by 2027-28, showcasing Indian Railways' commitment to sustainability and modernization.

    A Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report disclosed that Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) of Indian Railways bought equipment for discontinued diesel locomotives, worth Rs 6.85 crore, from a foreign vendor in 2017. The report highlights the vendor's delayed delivery and BLW's decision to accept the equipment at a 36% discount, despite initially rejecting it. The purchase was questioned due to the cessation of diesel locomotive production and discrepancies in the assessment of spare parts requirements.

    State-owned RITES Ltd has signed an agreement with CFM Mozambique for the supply of ten diesel locomotives and incidental services, with a total cost of USD 37,680,080 (Rs 314.1 crore). The contract has been finalized for the procurement of the locomotives.
