    Car discounts make comeback after four long years of waiting in the auto industry

    Car discounts have returned after four years of long waitlists, driven by changes in the automotive industry's pricing strategies. Dealers are ramping up production to meet high demand, especially for SUVs, and are offering substantial discounts across various models. Some discounts reach as high as Rs 1.5 lakh on specific models, including hatchbacks, sedans, and electric vehicles (EVs).

    Vehicle registrations increased by 3% to 2.09 million units last month, with delays in purchases due to election uncertainties and extreme heat. Passenger vehicle registrations slightly decreased by 0.96% to 303,358 units. Two-wheeler registrations rose by 2.48% to 1,534,856 units, three-wheelers by 20.09% to 98,265 units, and commercial vehicles by 4.07% to 83,059 units.

    In May, auto retail sales dropped by 5.28% from the previous month, influenced by the heatwave and the recent Lok Sabha elections, according to FADA. However, annual figures showed a 2.6% increase. Two-wheelers and commercial vehicles saw year-on-year growth, while passenger vehicles and tractors slightly contracted.

Factors like favourable marriage dates and improved economic conditions also contributed to this positive growth”, Singhania informed.

      According to data from FADA, the overall auto retail market in India grew by 15% YoY in January. However, commercial vehicles (CVs) only saw a 0.1% growth due to factors like extreme weather, tightened liquidity, high vehicle costs, and more restricted financing.

      In December, automobile retail sales recorded a 21% YoY growth, as per data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Two-wheelers (2W) witnessed a notable surge of 28%, three-wheelers (3W) grew by 36%, and passenger vehicles (PV) saw a steady increase of 3%. Tractor and Commercial Vehicle (CV) sales also rose by 0.2% and 1.3%, respectively.

      The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada) has called on the government to reduce the goods and services tax (GST) rate on entry-level two-wheelers from 28% to 18%. Fada president Manish Raj Singhania stated that although the two-wheeler segment has seen growth, it is still 20% below pre-pandemic levels. Singhania believes that reducing the GST rate would not only be a policy adjustment but also a socio-economic catalyst, as this segment constitutes 75% of total auto sales volume.
