    MDL submits bid for over Rs 20,000 crore project to build 3 new Kalvari class submarines

    Mazagon Dockyards Limited has submitted its response to the Defence Ministry tender for building three new Kalvari class submarines for the Indian Navy. The project, which will be built in Mumbai in partnership with French firm Naval Group, has already inducted five of the six Kalvari class submarines ordered in 2005 from France.

    The submarine is built under Project-75, indigenous construction project of six Scorpene-class submarines. Four of the Kalvari class of submarines have already been commissioned into the Indian Navy. The erstwhile 'Vagir' has a glorious past as the submarine with the same name was commissioned in November 1973. It was decommissioned in January 2001 after serving the nation for about three decades.

      The Navy is also set to commission the fifth of six new Kalvari-class Scorpene submarines being built in the Mazagon Docks. The final sub of the six will be delivered in 2024. They will be commissioned as INS Vagir and INS Vagsheer. With advanced stealth features, the Scorpenes are equipped with both long-range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles as well as advanced sonars and sensor suites.

      The Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) will launch 'Vagsheer', the sixth submarine under the P75 Scorpene project, on April 20, officials said on Friday. Sea trials for 'Vagir', the fifth submarine of Project 75, started in February 2022.

This 23,000 crore-plus project at Magazon Docks is in collaboration with the French for six Scorpene submarines.       Though the Scorpene project has faced huge time and cost overruns, it is critical for the Navy since it currently has just 12 other ageing diesel-electric submarines, with just half of them operational at any given time. India also has two nuclear-powered submarines, INS Arihant and INS Chakra, but the latter does not have nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles because it has been acquired on lease from Russia.

      According to a report by PTI, Indian Navy's fifth Scorpene class submarine Vagir, having superior stealth features like the advanced acoustic absorption technique, was launched on November 12 at the Mazagon Dock in south Mumbai. Vagir is part of the six Kalvari-class submarines being built in India. The submarines, designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS, are being built as part of Indian Navy's Project-75.
