    Former J&K High Court Bar Association Srinagar president Mian Qayoom detained for questioning, elections put on hold

    The officials informed that Qayoom was summoned for questioning by the State Investigation Agency officials and later detained for sustained interrogation in connection with the murder. The officials claim that they have collected "substantial evidence against Qayoom, who has emerged as a primary suspect in the case."     ECI sets ball rolling for J&K polls, orders electoral rolls' revision

    The full Election Commission of India (ECI) - chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar and election commissioners Sukhbir S Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar - is expected to visit J&K in July or early August for a ground review of electoral preparedness. The ECI has already begun moving the poll process. On Friday, the poll panel announced that it was set to conduct the second special summary revision (SSR) for updation of electoral rolls in the states of Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and UT of Jammu & Kashmir on July 1.

      Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced plans to reduce the number of private madrassas in the state by 1000. Currently, there are 3000 such madrassas in the state, with a socio-economic assessment for indigenous Assamese Muslims set to be completed this year. The Assam government is in negotiations with Madrassa bodies to reduce private madrassas from 3000.
