India records 514 fresh Covid cases in a day
India has reported 514 new cases of COVID-19, according to the health ministry. The country's active cases of the infection have decreased to 3,422. The data, updated at 8 am, also revealed three deaths in the past 24 hours - two in Maharashtra and one in Karnataka. Previously, the number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits until December 5, 2023.

The infected individual, who hails from Paomata in Senapati district, had travelled from Delhi to Dimapur by air and subsequently from Dimapur to Senapati by road. Maharashtra covid update: Maharashtra reported a rise in COVID-19 cases with 87 new infections and two deaths on Wednesday. Mumbai contributed 19 cases, while Pune city and Sangli district each reported a fatality. The state recorded 37 cases the previous day, but the number surged to 267 between December 21 and 27, including 10 cases of the new JN.1 variant of the Omicron variant. Cases of Covid sub-variant JN.1 rises to 109 in India

As many as 21 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected across the country till now, NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr V K Paul said on Wednesday but asserted that there was no need to panic. He said that the scientific community in India was closely investigating the new variant as he emphasised on the need for states to ramp up testing and strengthen their surveillance systems. Paul highlighted that about 91 to 92 per cent of those infected are opting for home-based treatment.
