Soon, road accident victims may get free cashless treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh at hospitals across the country
The Ministry of Road Transport has approved a proposal to provide free cashless treatment to victims of road crashes. Under this scheme, victims will receive medical care at Ayushman Bharat-empanelled hospitals with an upper limit of Rs 1.5 lakh for up to 10 days of hospitalization. Insurance companies will bear the cost. The initiative aims to provide timely medical assistance within the 'golden hour' and reduce road fatalities.

SC asks Centre to consider enhancing compensation in hit-and-run accidents
The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to consider enhancing compensation amounts in hit-and-run accidents. The Motor Vehicles (MV) Act provides a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for death and Rs 50,000 for grievous injury, but the court wants the government to review and possibly increase these amounts annually. The court also instructed the police to inform the victims' families about the compensation scheme.

The High Court of Karnataka has stated that compensation claims in road accidents do not need to be proved like criminal trials. The court dismissed an appeal by an insurance company challenging the compensation awarded to the family of an accident victim. The court emphasized that claimants do not have to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt, but rather on the basis of preponderance of probabilities. The court also upheld the compensation awarded by the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal and rejected the appeal for enhancement.

The Bombay High Court has ruled that an insurance company is liable to pay compensation to an accident victim's family, even if the licence of the driver of the offending vehicle had expired.
