    MV RAK CARRIER

The recent sinking of the cargo ship MV Rak Carrier off Mumbai’s coast, and the following oil slick, has brought to the fore, yet again, the huge price that India keeps paying for not being a signatory to many global maritime treaties.

The country of registration determines the laws under which the ship is required to operate and that are to be appl-ied in relevant admiralty cases.

Statistics indicate that 42 ships were grounded or sunk along India's western coast including Mumbai and Gujarat, mostly during the monsoon season since 2006.

An oil leak was today reported from the Panama-flagged cargo vessel MV Rak which sank off the city coast earlier this week due to ingress of water in the cargo hull, officials said.

Cargo Ship MV Rak Carrier carrying on board 60,000 tonnes of coal for Adani Enterprise Limited (AEL) and 32 crew members headed to Gujarat from Indonesia sunk near India's Mumbai coast in the afternoon.
