    Big drug hauls in Punjab; nationally, seizures up 160% in a decade

    Seizure of drugs by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) across all states have gone up by 160% between 2014 and December 2023 when compared to 2006-2013, according to home ministry data. NCB has registered 210% more drug-related cases during the same period. In Punjab, which goes to polls on June 1, drones have been recovered and drugs seized, making it among one of the top states as far as drug seizures are concerned.

    Over 1.40 lakh kg drugs worth Rs 2,381 crore were destroyed across India virtually in the presence of Amit Shah, India's Union Home Minister. The destruction of drugs, including 6,590 kg seized by the Narcotics Control Bureau Hyderabad unit, totaled more than 10 lakh kg worth Rs 12,000 crore over one year. From June 1, 2022, through July 15, 2023, regional units of the Narcotics Control Bureau and anti-narcotics task forces collected around 8.76 lakh kg seized drugs worth roughly Rs 9,580 crore, exceeding their target more than eleven-fold.
