    Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma bats for starting Skill University Academic session from July 2025

    Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the construction sites of Assam Skill University, Mangaldai Bypass, and Darrang Medical College & Hospital. He expressed concern over the slow progress of the projects and directed authorities to expedite completion. The Mangaldai Bypass on NH15 will enhance road connectivity between West Bengal, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. The Assam Skill University aims to offer modern skill education, while the Darrang Medical College & Hospital will provide healthcare facilities and medical education.

    Though his visit to Odisha was cancelled at the last minute, Gadkari launched these projects virtually. Among the inaugurated projects were a 79km four-lane road between Baharagora and Singhara on NH-49, valued at Rs 1,203 crore, and a 78km six-lane road from Chandikhol to Bhadrak on NH-16, costing Rs 2,035 crore.

    India plans to increase travel speeds on its national highway network from 47 kmph to 85 kmph by fiscal 2031-32. The plan includes decongesting highways and building high-speed corridors, with India spending Rs 19.5 lakh crore on this upgrade. This could reduce logistics costs to 9-10% of GDP, similar to countries like Singapore and the US.

      The government has identified 5,803 black spots in the entire National Highways network in the country, with Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Karnataka having the biggest share of such highly dangerous stretches, Parliament was informed on Thursday. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said state/UT-wise details of the accidents/fatalities at these black spots based on the data for 2018-2020 received from states.

      Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari said budgetary allocation of the road ministry has increased from about Rs 31,130 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 2,70,435 crore in 2023-24. Such increased budgetary allocation led to expansion of the National Highway (NH) network in the country from about 91,287 km in March 2014 to about 1,46,145 km at present, Gadkari added.
