The bridge was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina virtually in March 2021. Modi and Hasina had a brief interaction at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Sunday night after the swearing-in ceremony of Modi 3.0. Hasina is expected to return for an official visit later in June or July.

The bridge, spanning the Feni river between Bangladesh and Tripura, will provide northeastern states access to ports in the Bay of Bengal. With Chittagong port in Bangladesh just 80km from Tripura's Sabroom, the bridge's completion is strategically important for both countries.
