290 cases of COVID-19 variant KP.2, 34 cases of KP.1 detected in India: INSACOG data
India has reported 290 cases of KP.2 and 34 cases of KP.1, both sub-lineages of COVID-19 responsible for a surge in cases in Singapore. However, a Union health ministry source said these are all sub variants of JN1, and there is no associated increase in hospitalization or severe cases. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has found 34 cases of KP.1 across seven states and UTs, with Maharashtra reporting the highest number at 148.

After JN.1, the latest variety of COVID-19 variants is KP.2. It is an offshoot of the omicron variant. Scientists have said that the KP.2 has three additional mutations in its spike protein compared with JN.1.

Even though the number of cases is rising and the JN.1 sub-variant has been detected in the country, there is no cause of immediate concern as the majority of those infected are opting for home-based treatment, indicating mild illness, officials said.

Covid variant JN.1 spreading, but no rise in hospitalisations seen yet
India is experiencing a gradual increase in Coronavirus subvariant JN.1, with 162 confirmed cases so far, despite 798 new cases reported. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics (Insacog) held a meeting to review the situation amid the spike in Covid-19 cases and decided to hold another meeting next week to understand the proportion of JN.1 and other sub-variants.

AllMS Delhi issues guidelines for Covid-19 suspected and positive patients as city registers first JN.1 variant case
The director of AIIMS Delhi convened a meeting with all department heads on Wednesday to discuss contingency measures for COVID-19. During the meeting, topics such as the policy on COVID-19 testing, the allocation of specific areas for positive patients, and protocols for their hospitalization were thoroughly addressed.

Delhi Health Minister Bharadwaj urges caution, says city's Covid positivity rate around 1 per cent
"The new variants are not dangerous but people should not become lax and (they must) follow precautions. People should not panic and think that the virus is spreading and people are dying. But people should be cautious during this time of the festival season," he added.
Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 shows up in Kerala: Know symptoms & prevention tips
Although this new sub-variant is not life threatening, it is also easily transmissible . Here are a few tips to protect yourself from getting sick!
Covid JN.1 virus arrives in India: What are the symptoms, precautions and should you worry?
A new sub-variant of the coronavirus, named JN.1, has been detected in a woman from Kerala, marking the first case in India. JN.1 is closely related to the BA.2.86 variant found in the US and China. It has an additional spike protein mutation, potentially making it more transmissible and capable of evading immunity.
WHO urges member states to continue with 'strong surveillance' amid rising respiratory diseases, JN.1 subvariant
The World Health Organization warns of rising respiratory diseases and the emergence of the JN.1 COVID sub-variant, stressing global surveillance and sequence sharing. Maria Van Kerkhove cites various pathogens causing surges, emphasizing indoor gatherings and poor ventilation as contributors. She underscores the evolving nature of SARS-CoV-2 and advises vaccination and clinical care. India initiates preparedness measures after detecting the JN.1 subvariant, focusing on health facility drills and ongoing vigilance. Symptoms of the variant include mild upper respiratory issues, urging continued monitoring.
Research finds Omicron-infected children remain infectious for 3 days
Children infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 remain infectious for an average of three days after testing positive, according to a study by the University of Southern California and Stanford University.
Children infected with Omicron Covid variant remain infectious for 3 days: Study
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) and Stanford University in the US found that children infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 remain infectious for an average of three days after testing positive. The study suggests that school policies requiring students to stay out of the classroom for five days are more than sufficient.
New Covid variant Pirola not yet detected in India, tight vigil on: Insacog member
Insacog held a review meeting on Friday amidst increasing concern over the BA.2.86 variant, which is informally being termed Pirola. Its members were of the view that sewage testing for Covid-19 should be significantly increased "for timely detection of new variants like Pirola", the person said.
Canada detects first case of highly mutated coronavirus variant BA.2.86
The individual is not hospitalized, and the detection of BA.2.86 virus has not changed the risk to people in British Columbia, the province's top doctor, Bonnie Henry, and Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a joint statement.
After EG.5, WHO flags another Covid variant BA.2.86
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a new sub-variant of Omicron, BA.X.BA.2.86, as a "variant under monitoring" (VUM) due to the large number of mutations it contains. The sub-variant has been detected in just five cases in Denmark, Israel, the UK and the USA; nonetheless, concerns have been raised over its large mutations, potentially exacerbating fears of further Covid-19 cases.
WHO, US health authorities tracking new Covid-19 variant
The lineage is named BA.2.86, and has been detected in the United States, Denmark and Israel, the CDC said in a post on messaging platform X.
EG.5: How is Eris different from other Omicron variants?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared EG.5, a family of Omicron variants, a "variant of interest" following the rise of EG.5.1, known as Eris. Eris has been reported across the globe, particularly in Asia and now makes up the largest proportion of COVID cases in the US. Although no evidence suggests that EG.5.1 causes more severe disease than other Omicron variants, it is more transmissible and potentially vaccine-resistant. However, the bivalent vaccine antibody responses to EG.5.1 are similar to those for earlier variants with bivalent vaccine doses, generating a five-fold increase in antibodies that protect against variants in circulation.

The data was based on an analysis of more than 2,000 genomes by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the WHO said
Not much to worry about? BF.7 variant, linked to China spike, found in 91 nations for up to 2 years
According to data released by the Scripps Research Institute, 91 countries have had a variant matching the genetic make-up and mutation profile of BF.7 since February 2021. It was finally named BF.7 (also BA.5.2.1.7) and added to the BA.5 Omicron lineage in May 2022, said an Insacog scientist.
Omicron BA.2 less severe than its original and Delta variants : Study

BA.4.6: What we know about the new Omicron subvariant that is spreading
BA.4.6 is a descendant of the BA.4 variant, which was first detected in January 2022 . It's possible it could be a recombinant variant.
Another new COVID variant is spreading - here's what we know about omicron BA.4.6
The latest briefing document on COVID variants from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) noted that during the week beginning August 14, BA.4.6 accounted for 3.3 per cent of samples in the UK. It has since grown to make up around 9 per cent of sequenced cases. Similarly, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, BA.4.6 now accounts for more than 9 per cent of recent cases across the US. The variant has also been identified in several other countries around the world.
