    In what could be a significant success for indigenous weapon systems, two South American countries have shown interest in the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is also developing rockets that would be able to strike targets at 120 km and 200 km.

    Indian Army to showcase Made in India weapons and platforms at Republic Day parade

    The Republic Day parade in India will spotlight indigenously developed weapon systems, featuring the LCH Prachand chopper, Pinaka rocket launchers, and Nag anti-tank missiles. The LCH Prachand, a Multi-Role Combat Helicopter by HAL, boasts ground and aerial combat capabilities with modern stealth features. The Nag missile, developed by DRDO, excels in engaging fortified enemy tanks. Other displays include the Quick Fighting Reaction Vehicle, T-90 tank, BMP-2 infantry combat vehicle, and indigenous Swathi radar.

    • Defence Ministry clears orders for indigenous area denial munitions

      The defence ministry has cleared an order for indigenous area denial munitions, which will give additional lethality to Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers to take down enemy tanks, armoured vehicles and personnel. The indigenous Pinaka system is already in service with the Indian Army and has been progressively replacing imports from Russia. It has also bagged orders from Armenia and the new munitions will add to further export potential.

      In a major boost for the Indian Army, the Defence Ministry has approved a Rs 2,800 crore proposal for buying around 6,400 rockets for Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems. The Defence Ministry's Defence Acquisition Council's recent meeting had cleared the proposal for the acquisition of two types of these rockets, known as Area Denial Munition Type 2 and Type-3, ANI quoted defence sources as saying. The rockets would be procured by the Indian Army from indigenous sources only and two main contenders include the Economic Explosives Limited of Solar Industries and the Munitions India Limited-- one of the ammunition-producing companies created by the corporatisation of the erstwhile Ordnance Factories, they said.

India has emerged as a credible weapons supplier as per Armenia's requirements, they said.       The 155 mm artillery gun, which has been indigenously designed and manufactured, will be delivered to the friendly foreign nation over the next three years. The company has not disclosed the customer or the number of guns to be supplied but has said that the order is for a "non-conflict zone".

      Loitering munitions, more guns for army soon

      Defence establishment insiders said that the Army is also looking to shortly procure indigenously designed and developed loitering weapon system with enhanced strike capability, keeping in stride with requirements of a modern battlefield. Several responses have come from the industry and India is set to emerge as a global leader when it comes to loitering munition technology, they said.

      "The user trials of the DRDO-developed Range Pinka rockets were conducted at Balasore and Pokharan over the past few weeks. In a success for Make in India in defence, the manufacturers including Munitions India Ltd and Economic Explosives Ltd met the user requirements at the completion of the trials," the defence officials said.

      In the past, munitions of this class have either been imported or have been manufactured by the public sector, which could never completely meet annual requirements of the armed forces. As reported, the armed forces have been looking at creating alternate sources for munitions to reduce dependency on state owned units that have had a mixed track record. Industry estimates peg that privately manufactured munitions of different varieties be significantly cheaper than fixed pricing offered by state owned entities.

      Extended Range Pinaka rocket system successfully test-fired

      While the Pinaka MK-I rocket system has a range of around 40 km, the Pinaka II variant can hit targets at a distance of 60 km. The range of the Pinaka-ER (MK-I variant is not immediately known.)

      Indigenous Pinaka deployed at China border, more wait for longer range

      Designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Pinaka currently has a range of about 38 km, which is slightly increased when it is deployed at high altitude areas. The defence ministry has recently cleared a case for enhanced Pinaka rockets that would go up to 47 km as well.
