Gorakhpur Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase 7: Gorakhpur, known as a stronghold of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is set for an intense contest between two prominent Bhojpuri actors. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ravi Kishan and Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Kajal Nishad from the INDIA Bloc are relying on their star power to secure the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat.

Gorakhpur, one of the most high-profile constituencies, will vote in the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections on June 1. The constituency encompasses five Vidhan Sabha segments: Caimpiyarganj, Pipraich, Gorakhpur Urban, Gorakhpur Rural, and Sahajanwa, covering the entire Gorakhpur District.

The BJP has re-nominated their sitting MP and actor Ravi Kishan, while the SP has put forward actress Kajal Nishad. The Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) has also fielded Javed Simanani.

Yogi Adityanath, who is also the Peethadheeshwar of the renowned Gorakshapeeth (Gorakhnath temple), won this seat five times consecutively from 1998 to 2014. Although the SP won in a by-election after he became Chief Minister in 2017, the BJP reclaimed the seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections with Ravi Kishan as their candidate.

Ravi Kishan is counting on the support of CM Yogi, who previously held the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat for five terms.

"I want to thank the top leadership wholeheartedly... The organisation gave me a second chance from the hottest seat after Kashi. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire organisation and Prime Minister Modi. I will maintain this trust... BJP will win 400 seats, and the Gorakhpur seat will create history," said Ravi Kishan.

Earlier, UP CM Yogi Adityanath held a roadshow in Gorakhpur to support BJP candidate Ravi Kishan.

SP's candidate, Kajal Nishad, a well-known Bhojpuri film actress, is entering her first major political contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Nishad is also a popular TV actress, known for her roles in various daily soaps, including "Lapataganj."

Uttar Pradesh is voting in all seven phases of the Lok Sabha polls, with the final phase scheduled for June 1. The Congress, in partnership with the SP, is contesting the elections with a seat-sharing agreement. Congress is contesting 17 seats, while the SP has the remaining 63 seats.

In the 2019 general elections, the BJP won 62 out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, with its ally Apna Dal (S) winning two more. Mayawati's BSP secured 10 seats, Akhilesh Yadav's SP won five, and the Congress managed to secure only one seat.

The election for 543 Lok Sabha seats is being held in seven phases starting April 19, with votes being counted on June 4.
