NHRC seeks UP top cop’s report over ‘police pressure driving bros to suicide’
Agra: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the UP DGP regarding the recent suicides of two brothers allegedly due to police harassment, seeking a detailed report within a week.
Pramod Singh, 50, and his younger brother Sanjay Singh, 45, reportedly took their own lives within three days of each other due to alleged mistreatment by police officers from the Sadabad police station in Hathras.

The notice said, “The police are supposed to protect the people from any atrocity, but in this case, it appears that they became the perpetrators, which is a matter of concern.” The NHRC took suo motu cognisance of reports highlighting that a suicide note was found with one of the brothers, which pointed to the alleged police harassment. The DGP’s report should include the status of the FIR registered, actions taken against the involved officers, and any relief provided to the deceased brothers’ family.
The brothers’ family accused the police of custodial torture and extortion.
Pramod was found hanging from a tree on Monday, with a suicide note tied to his hand, just 48 hours after Sanjay had similarly taken his own life. Following directives from UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Agra police have arrested Sadabad sub-inspector Hariom Agnihotri from Hathras. Efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend SHO inspector Mukesh Kumar, according to officials.
