Osmanabad police raid illegal abattoirs, seize beef worth ₹7.6L
Aurangabad: The Osmanabad police carried out raids on illegal slaughterhouses and seized articles worth Rs26.8 lakh, including beef worth Rs7.6 lakh. Police also seized three vehicles that were being used for the illegal transportation of beef and rescued three bulls.
Superintendent of police Atul Kulkarni said the decision to raid the abattoirs indulging in illegal slaughtering and beef trading was taken after one of the police teams, while carrying out a surprise inspection, caught a tempo carrying a large amount of beef late on Thursday.
The tempo was caught in the vicinity of the Fakira Chowk in Osmanabad city. During the preliminary investigation, it came to the fore that a large amount of beef was being traded and sourced from an abattoir in the Khirnimala area of the city.
A team, led by the assistant superintendent of police M Ramesh, along with riot control police and quick response team squads raided the area and found abattoirs that were allegedly operating illegally.
“The operation was followed by panchanama and arrest procedure went on till morning. We have asked the local residents to abstain from getting into any illegal business,” the police said.
Osmanabad city police station inspector Usman Shaikh said during the raid, a large amount of fresh meat, animal hides, dried meat, equipment meant for slaughtering cattle and a sidecar, already loaded with beef, were found in the abattoir.
The officer said that three accused have been arrested and have been slapped with different sections of the IPC apart from the relevant sections of the Maharashtra Animal Protection Act.
