BHUBANESWAR: Isolated spells of heavy and moderate
rain in pockets of the city brought down the temperature substantially on Tuesday afternoon, giving relief from the heat. Commuters were taken by surprise by the heavy shower which slowed traffic and reduced visibility.
“The sky was overcast since morning, but the downpour was unexpected. However, the heavy shower was sporadic as several parts of the city did not get any rain,” said Sambit Swain, a corporate executive.
Such unseasonal rain and overcast skies accompanied with lightning and gusty winds brought down temperature across the state.As many as 28 places reported temperatures below 30° Celsius. Dhenkanal recorded lowest maximum temperature of 23.8C.
The city recorded a maximum temperature of 29.4C. The IMD has forecast thunderstorm, lightning and heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm at one or two places over Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Dhenkanal and Jajpur districts in the next 24 hours.
It has also issued an orange warning for thunderstorm and lightning along with hailstorm and gusty winds reaching 50-60 km/hr in several districts till Thursday. Jajpur received the highest of 60 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours, while the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 6.2 mm and 7.1 mm, respectively.
