Supply to resume today
Panaji: Water supply to major parts of Bardez was affected on Wednesday after the main 700mm diameter pipeline carrying water to the taluka from the Assonora water treatment plant was found damaged. On Tuesday evening, hundreds of litres of treated water was seen flowing out from the pipeline at Tivim due to the damage.
The water entered several areas near Dhumaskar Hospital.Locals said that ankle-deep water filled their houses, leaving wooden furniture and other items in their homes damaged.
The pipeline carries treated water to parts of Mapusa, Tivim, Calangute and Saligao constituencies. In addition to this, due to the damage to the pipeline, water supply has also affected parts of Moira, besides the areas of Nachinola, Uccacaim, Bastora, Anjuna, Vagator and Guirim.
The Public Works Department began carrying out repairs to the affected pipeline on Tuesday evening itself. Even though the work went on through the night, supply could not resume till the first half of Wednesday.
PWD engineers said that the work is expected to be complete by late on Wednesday, but supply will only be able to resume by Thursday.
"The entire pipeline had to be kept empty to be able to carry out the repair works. Even though the repairs will be completed by Wednesday, it will take time for the pipeline to be filled up and the water supply to reach the different areas. The supply is expected to resume by Thursday evening," one PWD engineer said.
