HYDERABAD: Medak MLA Mynampally Rohit was taken aback when he received a traffic challan for a vehicle he does not own, exposing a case of vehicle number plate cloning. The incident has triggered an official investigation by Cyberabad Police.
The confusion began on May 11, 2024, when MLA Rohit received a message on his mobile phone about a traffic challan issued on May 9, 2024, at 10:11 AM by the Suryapet Traffic Police Station in Telangana. The challan, totaling Rs 1,035, was for overspeeding and dangerous driving near Suven Pharma on the highway.
To his surprise, the vehicle in question was a white Volkswagen Taigun, whereas Rohit owns a black GMC Sierra with the registration number TS10FB9999.
Rohit immediately examined the challan photo, confirming that the car in the image was not his. Suspecting foul play, his personal staff member, S. Adithya Rao of Kompally, filed a formal complaint on May 16, 2024.
Rohit's GMC Sierra, registered in June 2021 with the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Hyderabad North Zone, clearly does not match the Volkswagen Taigun seen in the challan photo. This led to the registration of a case under sections 417 (Cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document), and 474 (Having possession of a forged document) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by Pet Basheerabad Police . Sub-Inspector P. Dharmesh is leading the investigation.
When analysed the pending challans on the number an outstanding challan of Rs 135 against MLA Rohit for a genuine parking violation on the service roads in Panjagutta on February 17, 2024. He is yet to pay this amount.
Authorities are now working to track down the individual who cloned the MLA's car number.
