MUMBAI: In order to increase the enrolment of students and prevent the closure of semi-English and Marathi medium schools, the state has decided to recruit English-speaking teachers in government schools.
The online registration of prospective teachers on the state’s Pavitra portal began on September 1, after six years. Over 2.16 lakh candidates who passed the Teachers Aptitude and Intelligence Test (TAIT) 2022 are eligible.

While candidates are awaiting advertisements on vacancies, the state on October 13 issued a circular to recruit English teachers as ‘resource persons’. Teachers recruited as resource persons will have to train teachers of their cluster schools to help develop the technique of teaching in English. Across Zilla Parishads and municipalities, over 10 to 15 schools form a cluster with one school as the main centre. English is taught as an oral subject from class 1. By class 3 students are taught written English. The English teaching is done by non-English medium teachers.
State education officials said English is a weak link in state schools. It will encourage English DEd teachers to turn to government schools. The state plans to have one proficient English teacher in every school.
The first preference will be given to a candidate who has completed both school and professional education in English. After that candidates with English up to 12 will be considered, followed by those with English up to 10th. Candidates with non-English medium schooling but professional education in English will also be considered.
