PUNE: IMD officials said on Monday that thunderstorm and rain activity was likely to reduce in Pune after Tuesday.
The weather department had issued a forecast of mainly clear to partly cloudy skies becoming partly cloudy towards the afternoon/evening with the possibility of thunder, lightning and rain until Tuesday. After that, Pune city could experience mainly clear to partly cloudy skies towards the afternoon/evening until May 23, followed by mostly clear skies.
Medha Khole, head of the weather forecasting division at IMD, Pune, told TOI, “A wind discontinuity from Rajasthan to madhya Maharashtra, coupled with another over peninsular India, is affecting the weather in Maharashtra. It was causing moisture incursion and on-and-off thundershowers. However, the wind discontinuity affecting madhya Maharashtra should dissipate soon, leading to reduction in
rainfall activity.” Pune city received very light to light rainfall spells on Monday evening in various areas. However, the rain quantum for 24 hours from 8.30am on Sunday to 8.30am on Monday was as follows — Wadgaonsheri 16mm, Hadapsar 15mm, Magarapatta 14mm, Chinchwad 11.5mm, Baramati 9.4mm, NDA 9mm, Shivajinagar 6.4mm, Dhamdhere 4mm and Koregaon Park 1mm.
Meanwhile, Khole said conditions were favourable for further advance of the Southwest Monsoon. “We expect the Kerala onset around May 31.”
