A Family Affair Review : This Nicole Kidman-Zac Efron starrer romantic drama delivers light entertainment

Critic's Rating: 3.0/5
Story: Zara, assistant to the egotistical movie star Chris Cole, is shocked to discover he's having an affair with her widowed mother. This revelation turns her world upside down.

Review: If the streaming platform had released this romantic comedy during Christmas, it might have gained more traction. However, ‘A Family Affair’ ends up being an average watch due to its light plot and passable performances. This film is light entertainment that doesn't require your full attention; you can follow along even while multitasking. While it falters in the romance department, the comedy keeps it somewhat engaging. The film works best in scenes that feature Zac Efron and Joey King, and Nicole Kidman and Kathy Bates. Although charming, the magic of ‘A Family Affair’ is sporadic.

The plot centers on Zara (Joey King), who works as an assistant to the egotistical and obnoxious movie star Chris Cole (Zac Efron). Chris is currently busy filming the latest installment of his superhero franchise, ‘Icarus Rush.’ Besides managing his film schedule, Zara runs errands like fetching his protein powder, buying gift baskets for his dogs with her own money, and delivering diamond rings to his boss when he's about to break up with his girlfriends. Fed up with the ordeal, Zara quits her job. Realizing he can't function without her, Chris goes to her home, where he meets her widowed mother, Brooke (Nicole Kidman). The two are instantly smitten, starting an affair that will have serious repercussions for Zara's family.

This film follows a linear plot, and the screenplay lacks the excitement needed to keep viewers engaged. It starts well with Chris Cole immersed in his superficial world, ticking off all the clichés associated with movie superstars. However, the story gains slight momentum once Chris meets Brooke and the plot turns sentimental. The film offers nothing new, and the transformation of Chris's character is unconvincing. As the film approaches its climax, it becomes more sentimental, which, despite being predictable, is somewhat appealing. The chemistry between Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman isn't ground-breaking but is still decent despite their age gap. A standout moment is the Christmas gathering at Kathy Bates' character’s home, where Efron's character candidly shares the loneliness of being a film star, which resonates emotionally. Or the comedic moment when Zara faints after discovering her mother and boss being intimate, followed by Chris's attempt to revive her by asking her a question.

Nicole Kidman delivers a controlled and decent performance as Brooke Harwood. Zac Efron, had he been more over-the-top in the film's opening scenes, could have added more depth to his character. He plays a superstar who caters to his fans' demands but is, deep down, a sensitive man—a portrayal that Efron makes credible. However, it's Joey King as Zara and Kathy Bates as Leila, Kidman's character's mother-in-law, who steal the spotlight. Joey King excels in the restless role of Zara, while Kathy Bates's charm is a standout.

‘A Family Affair’ requires a different perspective for its viewing. It's a film that might be easily dismissed, but it remains a light watch that doesn't burden or clutter your mind with unnecessary details. It's a decent watch for when you have some spare time after finishing all your tasks. You might just enjoy this romantic comedy if you give it a chance.
