Vetrimaaran reveals that the budget for 'Viduthalai' shot up by Rs 60 crore!

The sequel of the movie Viduthalai, starring Vijay Sethupathi, is currently under shooting. The director, Vetrimaaran, revealed that the film's budget increased by Rs 60 crore due to unexpected expenses during the filming. Despite the challenges, they completed shooting for the first part of the film and the revenue earned will help fund the shooting for the sequel. The second part of the movie is almost ready and will be sent to film festivals. The release of Viduthalai Part 2 has been delayed and is now scheduled for the first quarter of 2024.

Viduthalai Part 1 released in February 2023 and the movie was a success in theatres. Directed by Vetrimaaran, the movie starred Soori, Vijay Sethupathi, Bhavani Sre, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Rajiv Menon among others. The music for the movie was composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The film has a huge anticipation and expectation even before the release of the movie and now the sequel of the movie is currently under shooting.

Director Vetrimaaran in a recent media interaction revealed that the budget for the film went high by Rs 60 crore. He said that the initial budget of the movie was Rs 4 crore and later it went up till Rs 65 crore after he had done the rekki. Vetrimaaran said that once he visited the film sets, he understood that only 10 % of the film could be shot in the 20 days that he had planned. He revealed that nearly 70% of the budget was exhausted in the manual transport of all equipments. The director also said that after coming back to the base after shooting for a while, he realised he cannot complete the project with the already planned budget.
Vetrimaaran said that he even called the producer to tell him to put the project on hold and work on something else but both the producer and director were thinking about the significant amount of time, energy and money already spent on Viduthalai and wanted to continue it. He also said that he had planned for an alternative location apart from the hills and said that they moved to a lower spending movie set, they could not achieve what they anticipated to shoot. He then said, later actor Vijay Sethupathi came to their rescue and sold the project for a better price. Vetrimaaran revealed that after 120 days of filming, they decided to divide the film in two parts and came up with simple interval sequence and revised the movie script accordingly.
The director said that they completed shooting for the first part of the film and the revenue earned through will help them for a percentage of shooting for the sequel of the film. He also revealed that the movie's second part is almost ready and they will soon be sending it to film festivals. The sequel of the movie was said to be released in September, but as the shooting and post-production took time, the movie will be released in the first quarter of 2024.
