KANYAKUMARI: A fisherman from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, who had been working in Qatar for the last few years, was shot dead by Iranian pirates on Thursday morning.
The deceased has been identified as A Anish (21) from Enayamputhanthurai coastal village in Kanyakumari district. He had been working in a Qatari fishing boat.
Kanyakumari district collector Sajjansingh R Chavan confirmed death of Anish.“We are yet to know where and when it happened but the fishing boat and other fishermen have been was rescued by the Bahraini coast guard,” he said.
Anish and four others, all hailing from Kanyakumari district, were fishing in the Persian Gulf on Thursday morning when the Iranian pirates opened fire on them killing him, said general secretary of the South Asian Fishermen Federation Fr Churchill.
Fearing for their lives, the fishermen fled to the Bahraini waters seeking help from the Bahraini coast guard. They were escorted to Bahrain and the dead body of Anish was kept at a hospital in that country, Churchill said.
“We appeal to the state government to take steps to bring the body to his native village and offer a compensation to his relatives”, he added.
Anish was unmarried.
This is the second death of fishermen from Tamil Nadu in the waters of the Gulf countries this year. Siluvai Mathivalan from Pozhikkarai coastal village was shot dead by Iranian pirates on May 29. Mathivalan was working for a fishing boat in Saudi Arabia.
