Microsoft’s OneDrive may auto-backup files by default during Windows 11 setup

Microsoft has reportedly changed the default settings for OneDrive in Windows 11. Previously, users had control over enabling automatic folder backup during the initial setup. Now, new users who are setting up a new Windows 11 PC with an internet connection and Microsoft account login (the "recommended" setup according to the company), may find OneDrive automatically starting to sync folders like desktops, pictures, documents, music, and videos.

This can be a major inconvenience, especially for users who don't want their local files backed up to the cloud. Imagine finishing a fresh Windows installation, only to find your desktop and folders filled with shortcuts to files now residing on OneDrive.
Automatic folder backup in OneDrive can be a valuable tool when used intentionally. However, Microsoft's decision to enable it without user consent has reportedly caused confusion among users.
According to a report by Neowin, many users have taken to platforms like Reddit to express their concerns over the sudden appearance of green checkmarks next to files and shortcuts.
However, users who don't want OneDrive automatically syncing their folders can disable the feature. Additionally, users can choose to set up Windows 11 in offline mode to avoid this change altogether.
