It's back to school time! 📚 Our #Victoria, #BC, team will be setting a group of female-identifying students at the @University of Victoria a unique challenge this fall. In partnership with @WEST (Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology) — a student-led group that partners with academics and industry experts to enable students to take part in real-world design projects — we are offering 25 to 30 students the chance to work on a Passive Building Prototype (PBP) project. This year-round event space provides an inviting area for gatherings, offering panoramic views of the city and Rocky Mountains while fostering a unique ambiance that seamlessly blends nature with urban sophistication. Go Introbats! ⚾ 🏆 Our #Vancouver office team, with some help from our friends at TYLin, are 2024 Vancouver Architectural Softball champs after a thrilling win over local rivals Ironworks in the play-off final last weekend. We have been part of the Vancouver Architectural Softball League since 2014. It’s a mix of architectural companies, engineering firms, and the City of Vancouver planning department. Games run over an eight-week period before the season wraps with a one-day playoff tournament. Our victorious team in 2024 was led by Scott Ghomeshi (general manager), Kevin Welsh (head coach/player), and Alex Mitro (head coach/player), with Riya Tolia, Ezgi Yuruk H., and Alwinson Mathew as assistant coaches/players. Project Spotlight: VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre VanDusen Botanical Garden is one of the must-see destinations for visitors to #Vancouver, #BC. The Visitor Centre at the entrance to the Garden inspires visitors and passersby to explore the grounds beyond. We designed the mechanical and electrical services for this LEED Platinum-certified project. Here, Ali Nazari, our Vice President Energy & Sustainability, explains how our team blended passive design, natural ventilation, glazing systems, as well as optimizing its shading and orientation to create a living building. In operation since 1947, the Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is the largest municipally owned airport in Canada. With more than 60 non-stop commercial flights per day, YLW is undergoing a multi-phase expansion project to meet growing demand and breathe new life into the facility. As part of the Mass Timber Demonstration Program, phase one of the airport expansion project seeks to reinterpret the original 1960s modernist design with a two-storey prefabricated mass timber structure featuring a long-spanning “waffle-slab” roof design. The unique hybrid mass timber design utilizes renewable, locally sourced wood. Through carefully planned prefabrication and just-in-time delivery, on-site construction time is reduced, while the airport remains fully operational throughout the renovation. Recently, I had the opportunity to tour the Oakridge Centre Redevelopment in Vancouver—a landmark initiative poised to reshape the city's urban landscape. Our Introba team was integral to its success, offering specialized master planning, mechanical and fire protection engineering, energy modeling, and sustainability consulting services. Spanning 4.7 million square feet, the development features a 1.2 million square foot shopping mall and commercial area, a 430,000 square foot office building, thirteen residential towers (ranging from eight to forty-four stories and totaling 2.9 million square feet), a civic center, and three levels of underground parking. Our involvement focused on optimizing passive design strategies and leveraging synergies between different building types to maximize energy and resource efficiency while reducing operational and embodied carbon. We also conducted a feasibility study for a low-carbon energy supply, evaluating four system options in the context of the District Energy System (DES) for the Cambie Street corridor. With the preliminary analysis complete, we are now fine-tuning an energy system to fit the scale of the Oakridge project and align with future DES requirements. Our approach integrates mechanical and fire protection engineering, energy modeling, and sustainability consulting, working with a broader team to achieve diverse sustainability objectives, including energy and water efficiency, carbon reduction, rainwater management, and affordable housing.
