The US government is proposing a bold climate policy and fiscal spending agenda which will face its crucial test in US Congress in late September 2021. The $3.5 trillion 'Reconciliation Bill' has been described as a “once in lifetime” chance to pass meaningful climate policy in the United States.
However mainstream US industry associations including the US Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, the Business Roundtable as well as fossil fuel related groups the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the American Gas Association (AGA) are pushing back hard to dilute the critical climate elements of the Bill.
Direct evidence of this negative influencing is in the form of direct messaging and public letters as well as, in the case of the API and the AGA, well targeted advertising campaigns designed to reach key swing states where Democratic Congressional and Senator votes may be at risk.
The US Chamber, NAM and the Business Roundtable memberships are a who's who of corporate America including numerous companies such as Pfizer, Microsoft, Amazon and UPS, all of whom have made ambitious statements on climate and long term net zero targets.
