North America

Oil and gas industry pushes for fossil fuels under Inflation Reduction Act

InfluenceMap has found oil and gas sector entities engaging on various implementation dockets for the Inflation Reduction Act, pushing for greater incentives for fossil gas and weakening the Methane Emissions Reduction Program, including from trade groups American Gas Association (AGA) and American Petroleum Institute (API).

Utilities and trade groups engage to weaken implementation of the New York State climate plan

In New York State, where joint hearings are underway to consider implementation of the climate plan, InfluenceMap found negative engagement from utilities and trade associations, including API and the Business Council of New York State (BCNYS) , both of which strongly opposed the plan’s proposals toward phasing out fossil gas.

CEOs of Italian oil and gas companies advocate for more fossil fuel investment in Africa

InfluenceMap has detected a rise in lobbying efforts from Italian oil and gas companies, Eni and Snam), as the companies’ respective CEOs advocate for an increase in gas infrastructure investments in Africa in attempts to diversify Italy’s fossil fuel imports. Alongside this, both companies have disclosed 9 meetings in total with officials from the European Commission, with Eni also meeting with several leading officials from African countries to discuss the expansion of oil and gas resources.

Fossil fuel companies and associations continue to appear unsupportive of ambitious Safeguard Mechanism reforms

Submissions to the draft Safeguard Mechanism Reforms (Crediting) Amendment Bill 2022 shows continued opposition to ambitious reforms from the fossil fuel sector, including from the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association and the Minerals Council of Australia, and companies such as Glencore and Whitehaven Coal.
